In this book Marion Verweij highlights many of the women who struggle to make this world a better place for the present and coming generations. The women that speak out against all sorts of suppression and wrong doing, have often had the experience of the suffering they address first hand. Yet, it is not a book about suffering, but about hope. Without putting the finger of blame and without judging certain cultural traditions, the author, Marion Verweij, paints a picture of rites and habits still existing in the world today, that cause harm to women sometimes for the rest of their lives. As an antidote to the suffering and the oppression, the book presents certain qualities that are universal and apply to any human being, not just to women. Many women who spoke in this book embody these qualities. The book opens the way to each person to acquire these qualities for him or herself, and so make the world a better place. It is a book about human beings, and about how to preserve or win back our humanity – the most important thing of all.
